Warning Signs of a Brake Problem
Tips
Attention! There are certain warning signs we must take very seriously — and no, we’re not referring to traffic signals or dashboard warning lights. We mean those unusual sensations you may feel while riding, which can indicate a potential brake issue.
We never get tired of repeating it: when it comes to the braking system, your level of alertness must be even higher. Any irregular feeling should be inspected immediately.
Our first recommendation is simple: whether your motorcycle is new or you have recently replaced the brake pads and/or discs, you must properly bed-in the brakes. Avoid harsh braking and overheating during the first 200 kilometers.
A constant squealing noise while braking may be caused by contaminated brake pads. This happens when the pads come into contact with grease or oil, creating a thin film that blocks the porous surface needed for proper grip against the disc.
The result is reduced braking performance — something you definitely do not want in an emergency. This issue may also be accompanied by an unusually hard brake lever feel, another clear sign of a brake problem.
If the noise becomes sharper or more metallic, it may be caused by friction between the pad and disc due to dirt, debris, or an external object. This also accelerates disc wear, reducing thickness over time.
Remember that brake discs have a minimum thickness limit (Min TH). Once reached, they must be replaced. We explain it in detail here.
Another important symptom is vibration during braking. This may indicate a warped disc, but it can also point to wheel bearing issues or even poor wheel balancing.
On the other hand, if you notice a spongy brake pedal or lever feel, several causes are possible:
- Air trapped in the hydraulic system
- Brake fluid degraded due to excess moisture
- Brake caliper problems
Regular inspection and maintenance of your braking system is one of the most critical safety measures you can take — without forgetting the importance of properly maintained tires as well.
Your safety is our commitment. Braking is part of the joy of riding — don’t let it become a nightmare.
