How to know when to change brake discs?

Tips

Even if you search and search online, you will find countless articles about when to change the brake discs on a motorcycle or quad, but most of them will not explain what disc manufacturers actually recommend.

Riders often consider visible “scratches” on the disc as the main reason for replacement. While this can be an indicator, it is not the most important reason to change brake discs. A much more serious issue is when the disc becomes warped due to overheating or an impact.

Scratches on brake discs are usually caused by the friction between the brake pad and the disc. As the motorcycle moves, mud or small stones can get trapped between the pad and the disc. When braking, pressure is applied and grooves may form. If everyday riding already creates these conditions, imagine what happens during off-road riding .

When we talk about disc wear, we are really referring to a reduction in thickness. This affects brake feel: what once felt firm and powerful can become spongy, reducing the rider’s sense of confidence and safety.

Many factors influence disc wear: riding style, braking frequency, and terrain. It is not simply about how many kilometers you travel, but how you ride them.

So how do we know when a brake disc must be replaced due to wear? Every disc has an essential piece of information engraved on it: MIN.TH. xx (measurement in mm).

For example, if you see MIN.TH. 4.5, it means that once the disc reaches that minimum thickness, it is time to replace it.

Minimum thickness is the standard term used in the industry to indicate the wear limit of the disc. Once the disc reaches this measurement, the safest decision is replacement. Keeping your braking system in perfect condition is crucial.
