Motorcycle Airbags: An Extra Safety Boost

Unlike safety systems integrated into the rider’s gear, the airbag system built into the motorcycle bodywork has certain similarities to those used in the automotive industry. Since 2006, airbags have been mandatory in cars, helping to save lives in the event of an accident .

Due to the very nature of motorcycles, this is a difficult system to incorporate, and only a few large-displacement models are suitable for carrying it.

One of those models is the Honda Gold Wing in some of its touring versions. The width of the chassis and bodywork, the fairing, and its overall size have made it possible to integrate this airbag system, which deploys in the event of a collision.

Its operation is similar to a car airbag. In the event of an impact, a series of sensors trigger an inflation process using nitrogen gas, and in less than 0.15 seconds the protective airbag is deployed.

The airbag is made of a highly resistant material, such as nylon lined internally with a silicone coating. Its V-shape, with two side air-release valves, is designed to best cover the frontal space between the rider and the front of the motorcycle, acting as a barrier against the object involved in the crash.

Estimates suggest it can reduce up to 90% of the energy received during an impact, cushioning the deceleration and offering a degree of protection by limiting the range of head movement.

The RACC conducted a crash test with undeniable results. A simulated collision against the side of a stationary car at 72 km/h only resulted in injuries to the rider’s lower legs, while protecting the rest of the body. This type of crash scenario was chosen because it represents one of the most common types of motorcycle accidents.
